Xtabentún, the sacred liquor of the Mayas

When we talk about Mexico, it’s very likely that one of the first things that come to mind are tequila and mezcal. However, when we talk about the Yucatán Peninsula, the signature liqueur is Xtabentún; an aphrodisiac liqueur characterized by its sweetness, but above all, by its story.

If this is your first time hearing about this drink, don’t worry. Below, we tell you all about Xtabentún, from what it is and how to enjoy it, to its famous legend and the importance it has in the Maya world.

All about Xtabentún

1. What is Xtabentún?

Xtabentún is an ancestral Maya liquor made from the flower of the same name, which for the local people represents much more than a drink. Even for its elaboration, the nectar of these flowers is extracted by melipona bees, a sacred species of Yucatán well known for the healing benefits of its honey.

Also, unlike other typical liqueurs of the country, this one acquires a sweet flavor and is quite aromatic not only due to the use of the flower, but also for the touches of anise added to it.  Thus, Xtabentún was, and still is, a precious beverage for the Mayas.

2. What is the legend behind the Xtabentún?

According to the ancient Mayan legend, the Xtabentún is born from the spirit of the Xtabay, a woman who at first glance appeared to have a strong liking for men and because of this was treated as a sinner. However, her character was quite the opposite, since inside she was kind and always cared about others.

The name of this liqueur comes from the Mayan legend of the Xtabay

When she passed away, to the surprise of many, her body gave off a sweet aroma and some time later, when she was buried, beautiful white flowers sprouted from her grave and flooded the town with the same fragrance that came from her house. Realizing their mistake, the villagers named these flowers Xtabentún and later made a liqueur to honor her memory.

Another less fantasy version, suggests that Xtabentún emerged as an alternative to balché, a drink characterized for having a very bitter and unpleasant taste. Therefore, to make it more tasty, anise was later added to it, and so was born this legendary Mayan liqueur!

3. How do you drink Xtabentún?

Regardless of its origin, today the Xtabentún is enjoyed in many ways, especially if you are in the Riviera Maya. Its versatility is such that you can find it from its simplest interpretation; as a single drink with ice, to its more elaborate version as a digestive and in delicious cocktails.

Probably, the most frequent way in which it’s offered is cold and after a heavy meal, because thanks to the anise it is perfect to alleviate digestive problems. Also, some people mix it with coffee or prepare it in margaritas, and although it may seem surprising, it’s also possible to find it in various dishes of Yucatecan gastronomy.

4. Where can you try the best Maya liqueur?

As one of the most famous liqueurs in Mexico, Xtabentún can be found in many bars and restaurants throughout the country, but it is especially popular in Yucatán. Therefore, if you are on vacation in Tulum, Cobá or its surroundings, you cannot leave without trying it.
