Now, let’s talk about the practical aspect. Firstly, it is important to mention that Cobá is located exactly northwest of the state of Quintana Roo and within the municipality of Tulum.

This makes it close to other equally attractive tourist areas such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Valladolid.

How to get to Coba from Cancun?

Located approximately 2 hours from Coba, Cancun is one of the main routes to get to this mystical town. To do so, you can opt for the following forms of transportation:

By Car or rental car: If you prefer the flexibility to explore at your own pace, visiting Cobá by car is a great option. From Cancun, take the Cancun-Kantunil highway (Mexico 180D), then merge onto the Nuevo Durango highway and follow the signs to Coba.

Don’t forget to have a map or GPS on hand to make the trip go smoothly. Below you can see the detailed route.

By bus: On the other hand, a cheaper option is to take an ADO bus. However, for this you will have to travel to Tulum and from there take public transportation to Cobá.

Buses leave from Cancun’s ADO central station and the whole trip usually takes between 2 and 3 hours. It is recommended to check bus schedules in advance to plan your visit.

How to get to Coba from Playa del Carmen?

Coba is only 120 km away from this popular Riviera Maya destination, and to get there you have the same options as the previous destination.

The trip usually takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

How to get to Coba from Tulum?

Colectivos: Another efficient way to get there are the colectivos, shared vans that circulate along the main roads in the area. These offer an economical option for travelers and usually leave when they are full.

To board them, go to the center of Tulum or ask a local for guidance. Also, do not forget that this type of transportation does not have a definite schedule, so you must be aware of their departure.
